Ask for "Ancient Egypt" at medium difficulty and you get answers like ANUBIS, SCARAB and PAPYRUS crossing each other, with clues such as "Protective charm buried with the dead (6)". The grid is built by a solver that rejects any layout where the words don't share letters properly, so you never get a board of parallel words that only pretend to interlock.
How to solve a crossword faster
- Start with the shortest answers. They pin down letters for the long entries crossing them.
- Fill every answer you are certain of before guessing anything — certainty compounds.
- When a clue reads oddly, check whether the answer is a plural or a past tense; the clue's grammar always matches the answer's.
