Why scanning beats reading
Most people read a word search left to right, line by line, which is the slowest possible method. Try this instead: pick the least common letter in your target word — the Q in QUARTZ, the X in EXPLORER — and sweep the grid hunting only for that letter. A grid has maybe two Xs and forty Es, so rare letters cut the search space enormously.
Word search tricks that actually help
- Hunt the rarest letter in the word, not the first letter.
- Look for double letters — LL, SS, OO stand out visually in a field of random letters.
- Sweep in one direction at a time. Mixing directions is what makes people miss words that are right there.
- Turn the device (or your head) to check diagonals — they are the most commonly missed direction.
- Leave the longest words until last. They are the easiest to spot once the grid is partly cleared.
